Senior R&D Engineer - Sherwin-Williams - Warrensville Heights, OH


This position is responsible for developing new products and supporting existing tools and accessories used by DIY and professional painters. Additional responsibilities include identifying and resolving quality issues and improving the designs of existing products. This position is responsible for the successful transition from product concept to full-scale commercialization with internal and external manufacturers.

1. Liaison for the application engineering function across various teams consisting of Marketing, Sourcing, Quality Services, Plant Technical Services, and Internal/External Manufacturing Plants.
2. Lead investigation into the root cause of quality issues, provide options to team, and facilitate resolution.
3. New Product Development
    • Initiates and leads new product development. 
    • Participate in ideation & brainstorming sessions.
    • Facilitate definition of project scope through collaborating with cross functional team.
    • Communicates updates to team and management.
    • Reviews and provides input to SW Legal team on Intellectual Property protections. 
    • Design and create Prototypes for testing and validation.
    • Follows Product Design stage gate process from concept to commercialization.
4. Validation Testing
    • Creates testing / quality plans in conjunction with suppliers.
    • Analyze results to qualify project objectives.
    • Develop and finalize validation qualification protocols and Internal Test Methods with supplier.
    • Participate in Continuous Improvement Projects and issue final reports.  
5. Initiates and leads maintenance of business for existing products.
6. Responsible for 3-D models, drafting of prints and specifications, and implementing quality control procedures.
7. Contribute to other teams on ideas to support the improvement of paint and applicator methodology.

Formal Education
Required:
• Must have a bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (“STEM”) field

Preferred:
• BS Engineering (other discipline) or equivalent experience    
• BS in Engineering – Design, Mechanical, Mechanical Technology.

Knowledge & Experience
Required:
• 5 years of experience in developing consumer products and/or machine design.
• Knowledgeable in using CAD software. Proficient in best practices of 3-D modeling and drafting.
• Working knowledge of best practices for part and product design. 
• Conducting research and testing for product development and validation.
• Knowledgeable in troubleshooting failures to resolve product and manufacturing issues.
• Inspecting and qualifying parts and assemblies for production.

Preferred: 
• Proficiency with Solidworks, AutoCAD, and FEA software.
• Brainstorming and concept development of new products.
• Familiar with DFMEA/ PFMEA, Continuous Improvement, DFSS processes, and quality inspection systems.
• Experienced in global component sourcing and vendor selection.
• Experienced in site visits to domestic and international manufacturers.
• Project management with organizational and leadership. 
• Leadership of internal and external support personnel.

Technical/Skill Requirements
Required:
• Proficient in the design of 3-D parts and assemblies.
• Proficient in drafting, dimensioning and tolerancing. 
• Knowledge of strength of materials and use of stress analysis tools.
• Recognition and implementation of good tooling and fixture design.
• Competent in the use of QC equipment for part inspection.
• Safe use of manual and power tools.
• Able to fabricate and assemble prototypes. 
• Proficient use of Microsoft Suite, (Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
• Good interpersonal and leadership skills.

Preferred: 
• Proficient Solidworks and FEA user. 
• Knowledgeable of 3D printing and scanning techniques.  
• Familiar with paint application tools, basic paint technology, and application methods. 

Upon completion of construction, the individual selected for this role will primarily work at the new Sherwin-Williams Global Technology Center in Brecksville, Ohio. Construction is expected to be complete in Q4 2024. Until then, the role will be based at 4440 Warrensville Center Road, Warrensville Heights, OH 44128.
